Be careful who you surround yourself with.
I’m sure we’ve all heard this advice before, but do we really put it into practice?
I know there have been times where I haven’t and it’s brought on a lot of frustration. Nothing bad, just more mentally frustrating and exhausting.
Maybe it’s because I’m getting older but I’ve been way more strategic with my time and energy lately. Including being very picky with who I surround myself with and oh what a difference it makes.
The people you surround yourself with will start to rub off on you.
Just think about it…..
Do you have an accent? Are you surrounding by people with accents?
I was born and raised in the mountains of North Carolina, so of course I have a certain southern twist to my talk. But…. I haven’t been living in the south for going on 6 years now…. and my accent has faded a good bit. But get me around family for awhile and the accent slowly starts getting a little stronger.
Even if you don’t have an accent. Think about the people you are around… most the time there are certain words or phrases you start to pick up from others around you.
Same thing happens with mindset & attitudes.
If you are naturally a more anxious person, hang around with someone who is calm and odds are you will start to calm down a bit.
Have a friend who seems to always have something going wrong and things are always so hard for them?…watch out, because you might start to get down yourself and always see the bad.
Everyone is different, and that’s completely fine. All I’m saying is that you really want to be careful with who, and what behaviors you are surrounding yourself with.
So how do you become picky with who you surround yourself with?
For me it’s all about my core values.
I value people, time, experiences & kindness….. so I don’t really get along well with people who are very materialistic and self-centered. It’s not that they are bad people, it just that their values don’t align with mine.… which can then lead to frustrations.
I’m not saying that you need to neglect people or completely push them out of your life, I just think that it is important to be very aware with who you are giving your time and attention to, because they will rub off on you….. make sure it’s for the better.
Your time (and their time) is precious…..it’s okay to be picky on how you spend it.
