How do you know that you are ready for kids?

How do you know that you are ready for kids?

I get asked a good bit for advice about kids and starting a family…. and one of the most common questions I get is

“How do you know that you are ready for kids?”

Here’s the thing…. no one is ever fully ready to have children.

But there are a few things that I always tell people that they should consider when thinking about starting a family.......

Why are we so hard on ourselves

Being a parent is the most amazing, wonderful and hardest job in the world.  We are in charge of caring and raising these beautiful little humans and guess what?!.....It's not easy!!!

So, why are we so hard on ourselves when it comes to parenting?  Don't get me wrong, I know it is a huge responsibility and I think we owe it to ourselves, our kids and honesty our society (no I'm not being dramatic), that we raise our kids to be the best people they can be.

Even with that responsibility weighing on us everyday, I truly believe that we should try not to be so hard on ourselves as parents.

There are going to be days when it seems like we deserve the Parent of the year award..... the kids ate well, played well, napped well, listened and behaved.

......but many times those days are few and far between. (true story: I am currently writing this while my little one is fighting a nap....yay! Go Me!)

Truth is there are going to be many days when we sit down exhausted, staring at the mess that was left in the living room, thinking about how many times we've lost our temper that day and we will ask ourselves "Where did I go wrong?"..... "Why aren't they listening to me today?" ..... "Why can't I be as calm as all those other parents who have way more kids?" (I know some of y'all are nodding your head in agreement with me...we've all thought these before.)

Here's the simple truth....We are parents, which some days feels more like super heroes or at least the energizer bunny running strictly off of coffee, but we are also human......and humans....and parents are Not perfect!

All those calm parents that you see.....they lose it just as much as we do!

All we can do is raise our kids to be good, honorable, honest, kind them love, discipline when needed (and is needed.  You got time outs and you turned out fine, right?!), enjoy them while they are still at home and do the best we can.

We will all have those days when there are piles of dishes in the sink, at least 3 loads of laundry that needs to be done, about to pull you hair out because they aren't listening, multiple cups of coffee kind of days.....and that's okay.  It's apart of being a parent!

Don't be so hard on yourself.  Do the best you can, trust me by the end of the day when you are getting those bedtime cuddles you will did well.
